The Threepenny Opera

Play by Bertolt Brecht

In my adaptation of The Three Penny Opera, i decided to set the play in modern-day Cardiff, Influenced by the City I live in and drawing upon what I see around me in my day to day.

Heavily inspired by John Gay’s original Beggar’s Opera. I decided to tell the story through a street performance, with modern day beggars acting as the narrators, using marionette puppets to perform the scenes of the characters in the play (Heavily influenced by Punch and Judy) . This choice emphasizes the controlled, manipulative nature of the wealthy characters within the script, while adding a layer of satire. The approach aims to blend humor and dark, grotesque reality, encouraging the audience to reflect on what they’re watching and highlighting themes of inequality and corruption in a way that feels entertaining and thought provoking.

Final Set Model and Costume Drawings

Creating a Subway tunnel at the back of the stage for the actors playing the narrators to walk along during the performance, Giving the end on set levels for the audience to see the performers acting out scenes with the puppets in hand.

I decided to place the rail of puppets all hung towards the back of the wall to create seamless transitions for the constant changing puppets scene to scene. Also aiming to keep the audience aware throughout, that this is a imitation of a street performance. Reflecting on this if i were to realize this performance, I would incorporate key lines from the script married into the writing of the graffiti, so it is connected to the current political climate and the world of the script.
